New artwork unveiled at Summertown in Oxford
The installation was created by Sheffield-born artist Elisa Artesero, who uses light and text in her work, and features a magical walkway outside the new easyHotel development on Banbury Road in Summertown.
Entitled Between the Sun and the Moon, the work is inspired by JRR Tolkien’s Hobbit.

Explaining the artwork on her website, she described how “the spatial layout draws symbolically from the iconic blanket, with the sun and moon-inspired sculptures sitting at opposite ends.”
During the day, the solar sculpture captures natural sunlight cascading patterns onto the sidewalk, while at night, text is projected onto the sidewalk using the light.
Paul Lancaster, Director of 4Urban Consulting, said: “Famous award-winning light and text artist Elisa Artesero has unveiled her latest project as part of the easyHotel development in the popular Summertown area of Oxford. easyHotel offers budget hotel rooms in 42 locations (including Oxford) around the world and the new Oxford hotel will have 180 rooms.
“The project is inspired by one of the most famous works of a former Summertown resident, “The Hobbit” by JRR Tolkien. Artesero has created artistic and poetic interventions that will create a magical walkway outside the new easyHotel.
The easyHotel development on Banbury Road opened in December and hopes to provide easy access to nearby attractions, such as Blenheim Palace.
