Michigan Medicine Parent Stories – Michigan Medicine Headlines

This initiative, funded by a grant from the Office of Wellness collects stories about the intersection of parenthood and careers in healthcare. We invite you to share your own story or photographs / artwork (yours or your children’s!) To help create a community of awareness, insight and compassion for all who work in this profession.

Work / life integration in medicine is difficult at the best of times. Parenting, along with the journey to parenting, adds a whole new dimension to the work / life challenge. We can feel lost, uncertain, overwhelmed, in conflict or guilty. Alternatively, we can feel joyful, hopeful, fulfilled, accomplished, or proud.

Although parenting is an important part of many of our lives, we don’t often feel comfortable talking about it at work. We are concerned that we will be judged as less career oriented and that there may be negative impacts on our career trajectory.

In addition, some topics are stigmatized (miscarriage, loss or infertility) and / or are excluded from discussions (LGBTQIA relationships, single parenting challenges, children with special needs) and are even more difficult to discuss openly.

We believe it is important to normalize and de-stigmatize discussions about the intersection of work and parenting. We want to help all parents and future parents see that their feelings and experiences are normal and that they are not alone on their journey.

What is the aim of this project?

The goal of this project is to create a sustainable resource for anyone who reconciles the journey of parenthood with a career in medicine. There will be three exits:

  • A professionally published manuscript containing selected stories and illustrations from Michigan Medicine learners, staff and faculty on parenting while working in a teaching hospital.
  • An electronic compilation of additional stories from Michigan Medicine learners, staff and faculty.
  • A recurring live panel hosted by the Michigan Medicine Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development where participants in this project will discuss and answer participants’ questions about parenting while working in medicine.

Additionally, we hope this will spearhead efforts to create a supportive community for parents in our institution.
