James Gunn introduces new MCU character in Guardians’ vacation special
Director James Gunn says he’ll feature one of the greatest MCU characters of all time in Guardians of the Galaxy vacation special
Director James Gunn has said he plans to feature one of the greatest MCU characters of all time in the Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special. Gunn is currently preparing to film the two. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as well as the Holiday Special, which will turn back to back. Gunn recently finished The suicide squad for Warner Bros., a 2016 pseudo-sequel from David Ayer Suicide Squad, but with an R rating. The film underperformed at the box office but was well received by critics and fans alike.
Disney initially fired Gunn before starting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as a result of the reappearance of old tweets. The director then moved on to WB to direct The suicide squad before being rehired by Disney. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is finally back on track to release in 2023, with Gunn in the midst of pre-production on the film. Gunn is also preparing to release a Peacemaker series on HBO Max, focusing on the character of John Cena from The suicide squad, so the director has his hands firmly anchored in the Marvel and DC projects for now. The director announced his Guardians of the Galaxy Vacation Special in December 2020, slated for release on Disney + in December 2022.
By doing some questions and answers on Twitter, Gunn he was asked if he would introduce any new characters in the special, like when Boba Fett appeared in the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special before appearing in The Empire Strikes Back. Gunn said that in his “incredibly subjective and admittedly often strange opinion,“that he would be “featuring one of the greatest MCU characters of all time.” Check out his tweet below:
Route details for the Guardians of the Galaxy vacation special are unknown at the moment. Gunn said that would lead directly to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, so it doesn’t seem like just a stand-alone story. It is the same with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, in terms of what is known about the story, although Gunn has hinted in the past that she would focus to some extent on the origin of Rocket Racoon (or his possible death). Gunn teased that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be “huge” and star Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, says it will be a “bittersweet” end of the series.
The big question, of course, is who could this mysterious character be? With Gunn’s sense of humor, it could be an obscure or silly character who is more humorous or quirky than an actual “big” character. There is still a treasure trove of MCU characters who have yet to get their due, and with Marvel reclaiming the rights to their X-Men universe, it’s even more possible that they’re someone special. However, Gunn created Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and this gain has not yet come. Gunn likes to let people guess, and he’s done a good job of keeping surprises a secret and debunking wacky theories, so fans will just have to wait to unbox the guardians of the galaxy Holiday special in 2022 to see what gift the director has in store.
