Frontier Days returns | News, Sports, Jobs

It’s a “new frontier” – the 47th annual Frontier Days celebration is back and bigger than ever for 2022.

According to event chairman Terry Cook, the vision for Frontier Days has once again become an event focused on family entertainment with something for everyone to enjoy.

“I’m trying to bring it back to what it was 47 years ago,” he said. “We want people to have fun.”

There will be entertainment and activities for the whole family, Cook said. The Paul Bunyan Lumberjack show returns with log rolling, sneaky chopping, stepping stone chopping, sawing through, ax throwing and a chainsaw contest.

“They have three new artists coming in,” said Cook.

Buckskinner Camp is also back this year with live demonstrations on Saturdays.

Polkadot Entertainment will also be putting on a series of shows all weekend featuring comedy, stilt walkers, juggling, magic and more. One show will even feature an inside-out straight jacket escape while swinging 20 feet in the air.

Admission wristbands this year will cost $6 each, or $22 in total for a family of four.

“We are organizing a huge raffle” said Cook.

The raffle will include prizes like a quilt courtesy of Tilley’s Quilts, a $150 pair of shoes from Brown’s Shoe Fit, a weekend getaway to the Wild Rose Casino and Hotel in Jefferson, and a series of gift cards . Raffle tickets are $2 each or three for $5 and can be purchased at the Fort.

One of the biggest attractions — both in size and anticipation — Cook said is Saturday’s Raminator monster truck demonstration. A collaboration with Shimkat Motor Co. for its 75th anniversary and Frontier Days, spectators can gather in the parking lot near the Iowa Central campus parking lot to watch the giant Raminator roll and smash cars. The show starts at 2 p.m.

“If the weather is good, we expect 10,000 people for this show”, said Cook.

Rides will be available before and after the show in a second Raminator truck.

The celebration will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday with the opening ceremony at the Avenue of Flags on the grounds of the Fort Museum. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. Local band Cory Waller and the Wicked Things will perform outside at 8:00 p.m. and there will be karaoke at the Frontier Opera House from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

“We had so many people asking for karaoke,” said Cook.

On Saturday, Parade Marshals John and Margo Daniel will lead more than 100 Frontier Days Parade participants along Central Avenue. The parade will start at 10 a.m.

“It’s probably still going to be an hour and a half parade,” he said. “We usually have between 6,000 and 7,000 people coming to the parade.”

The Frontier Marketplace will feature over 30 vendors selling unique specialty items, decorations and gifts all weekend long. A series of food vendors will also be offering snacks including root beer, hot corn, Indian tacos, funnel cakes, ice cream, cotton candy, corndogs and more.

On Sunday morning, the public is invited to a religious service in the Chapel of the Fort Museum, hosted by Hillbilly Bob at 9:30 am.

Although Cook is doing most of the organizing for the event, he said he couldn’t put on this celebration without the help of community sponsors. The Iowa Central rugby team will set up the fence to surround the Fort Museum field on Wednesday and take it down on Sunday. Banners for sponsors will be hung on the fence for the weekend.

Once the Frontier Days 2022 celebration wraps up on Sunday, Cook will take a few weeks off before starting planning for the 2023 celebration.

“It’s a lot of work, but the end result is nice to be able to see the smiles on people’s faces,” he said.
